When I started Black Moms Blog in December of 2015, I never imagined that it would grow into a global platform. It initially began as a website and social media outlet to spread a positive message about parenting, culture, and lifestyle from a Black mom’s point of view. I wanted to flood the internet with positive images of Black parenting that contrasted what we were used to seeing in the media – broken homes, angry women, neglectful parenting. We were so much more than that as Black parents.
In the course of the two and a half years this platform has been active, Black Moms Blog has grown immensely! We now have a global community of more than 415,000 members, we are able to work with an intimate group of Black mom bloggers, support Black owned businesses through promotion, and travel to host meet ups in different parts of the United States.
The goal of our meet ups is to be able to gather a group of moms and bond. I want the mothers to find a friend within the group and continue to have play dates and build a sisterhood after the meet up is over. For most millennial mothers especially, we are the only moms in our group of friends. Things change after parenthood and we need support circles around us that understand that.
This summer we were blessed with the opportunity to host our very first international meet up! I traveled to Toronto, Ontario to host The Mama Picnic at High Park. I came together with Robina Walling, Lily Yange, Monique, and Nadia from Hip Hop Yoga to plan a fun day of mommy and me yoga, a sister circle of health and wellness, and a little Drake dancing at the end (it was fly). Caroline Lynch of Caroline Cupcake provide us with delicious cupcakes and Catherine Cachia came through super last minute for photography! These are her lovely images you are seeing!
As the creator of this platform, I want to say thank you. Thank you every mom that has shown up. Thank you to every mom that has shared an article or tagged a friend. I am so excited for what the future has in store for us! Check out some wonderful images from our Mama Picnic!
